Reactions

  • Substitution
    • One or more atoms replace another atom or group of atoms in a molecule
    • Example:
      • CH4+Cl2=CH3Cl+HCl
  • Addition
    • One in which two parts of a molecule are added to an unsaturated molecule that increases the saturation
  • Elimination
    • One in which a simple molecule, such as water or ammonia, is formed from adjacent carbon atoms of a larger molecule
    • Example:
      • Ethanol makes ethene and water while in the presence of H2SO4
  • Esterification
    • A reaction which requires two reactants (usually an acid or an alcohol) that creates an ester in the product
